Why is Shearman Behind in Compensation?
Shearman is a great firm, but its selective reaction to recent salary moves in NY and California is disturbing. If it truly believes associate moral is not affected by salary, why did it make 3rd year bonus part of its plan to improve associate retention last year?

Below the Market Wage
Shearman associates always took pride in being compensated at the same rate as their peers in the creme-of-the-crop tier of white shoe firms such as Sullivan & Cromwell, Davis Polk, Skadden Arps, etc.
Its first year compensation levels, just boosted yesterday, do not match those of the leading firms in backwater Boston ($140K) or high-tech Silicon Valley (up to $160K), not to mention Skadden Arps ($140K + merit bonus).
Its compensation for upper-level associates lags behind its colleagues at Sullivan and others.
Notoriously greedy Shearman associates may soon flock to the exits...
