Just got back from Playa del Carmen. (1 hour south of Cancun). It's cheap, close and fun. One can indulge in the cheeesy nightlife of Cancun and then head down to the more secluded (and European) PDC. Its an hour by boat to Cozumel from PDC, which has some of the better scuba diving in those parts. Good restaraunts and beach bungalos.
