I don't know why "everyone" is doing it, but I am because (1) Honigman is the only Michigan firm trying to compete with national firms in terms of salary ($20k+ more than the other Michigan firms and only $10k less than Foley) and hours/QOL/firm culture (which isn't a positive in my opinion) as reported by people I know who have worked at a number of Detroit firms and (2) while every large Michigan firm has at least a handful of excellent attorneys, the level of excellence at Honigman goes deeper than at other firms (i.e. further down the ranks). I think this is a widely held view (for example, Honigman attorneys dominate Michigan Super Lawyers this year) and it makes sense--higher salaries attract top talent.
